If it's cool, freshwater, if it's warm, salt, generally. Big bass can be caught year round, but they spawn in late January or February, and maybe early March depending on the year. Starting in May the saltwater fish show up and start biting through about November when the water starts cooling and they head out. Having said that the best time to fish is when you have time. Remember, as the Thoreau said, "Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after."
